Pumpkin Date Cookies

 Cookies

 1/2 cups granulated sugar
 1 cup canned pumpkin
 1/2 cup butter or margarine (softened)
 1 egg
 1 teaspoon vanilla
 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
 1 teaspoon baking powder
 1 teaspoon baking soda
 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
 1/2 teaspoon salt
 8 ounces chopped dates


Frosting

 3/4 cup brown sugar
 1/4 cup butter or margarine (softened)
 1 1/4 cups powdered sugar
 1 to 2 tablespoons half and half or cream
 1 teaspoon vanilla
 1/2 cup finely chopped pecans or walnuts


1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit

 2. Lightly grease and set aside cookie sheets.

 3. Combine sugar, pumpkin, butter, egg and vanilla, beating at medium speed with an electric mixer until well blended.

 4. Add flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt, by thirds to the pumpkin mixture.

 5. Beat until a soft dough forms.

 6. Fold in dates.

 7. Drop by heaping teaspoons onto cookie sheets and bake for 15 minutes or until set.

 8. Cool completely.


For Frosting 

1. In a saucepan, combine brown sugar and butter over medium heat stirring constantly until smooth.

 2. Remove from heat and add the rest of the frosting ingredients.

 3. Stir until smooth.

 4. When cookies are cool spread evenly over them and sprinkle tops with nuts
